Benefits of admission of nonagenarians to functional rehabilitation units

Introduction: The aging population has significantly increased the number of nonagenarian patients requiring rehabilitation.
Objective: To identify the variables related to functional gain and discharge destination in nonagenarian patients admitted to a functional recovery unit.
Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted that included 235 nonagenarian patients admitted from January 2023 to November 2024. Variables: age, sex, cognitive impairment, comorbidities, functional assessment, walking ability, complications, length of stay, functional gain, and discharge destination. R Ver. 4.1.3 was used for statistical analysis. The significance level was set at p < 0.05.
Results: Mean age of 92.46±2.03 years. Functional gain of 27.32±19.8. 60.85% of patients returned to their home. In the multivariate analysis, factors associated with functional gain ≥20 were: higher score on the gait evaluation scale at admission (p=0.004) and at discharge (p=0.039); lower score on the Barthel index at admission (p<0.001); higher score on previous Barthel index (p=0.006); absence of depression (p=0.009); younger age (p=0.006); admission due to functional deterioration (p=0.001) and ortogeriatrics (p=0.003). The variables related to institutionalization at discharge were: longer stay (p=0.024), lower efficiency (p=0.022), lower score on the functional gait evaluation scale (p=0.001), and heart failure (p=0.031).
Conclusions: Nonagenarian patients benefit from rehabilitative treatment in functional recovery units. The early identification of associated clinical and functional variables allows for the optimization of therapeutic planning and an individualized approach aimed at functional recovery and return home.
