Impacto de la rehabilitación sobre capacidad funcional y el dolor en adultos mayores con enfermedades de hombro

Introduction: The aging population has led to a significant increase in musculoskeletal disorders, especially in the shoulder joint, which directly affects the functionality, independence, and quality of life of older adults.
Objective: To evaluate the impact of a comprehensive rehabilitation program on pain reduction and functional improvement in older adults with shoulder conditions.
Methodological Design: A quasi-experimental study with a single intervention group was conducted in patients over 60 years of age diagnosed with scapulohumeral bursitis, tendinitis, or periartritis. Rehabilitative therapies were applied. The Visual Analog Scale was used to assess pain and the Barthel Scale to evaluate functionality. The Wilcoxon test and Bhapkar test were used to determine whether there was a significant difference after treatment.
Results: A significant reduction in pain was observed, as well as an improvement in functional levels. Most patients achieved levels of independence or mild dependence at the end of the program. The interventions were well tolerated and showed high adherence by participants. The most commonly used techniques were multicomponent exercises and occupational therapy.
Conclusions: The comprehensive physical therapy approach proved effective in improving pain and functionality in older adults with shoulder conditions. Its implementation in geriatric care programs is recommended, with a multidisciplinary and personalized approach.
