Relación entre el Índice de Barthel, la edad y el tiempo de internación prolongado en ancianos ingresados por insuficiencia cardíaca

Introduction: Understanding the influence of the Barthel Index on length of stay in aged patients with heart failure will allow for individualized health care interventions. Objectives: To characterize the behavior of the Barthel Index according to age groups. To determine the relationship between the Barthel Index, age, and length of stay. Method: A prospective analytical study was conducted with elderly patients hospitalized for heart failure. The population was divided into two age groups: "under 80" and "80 or older," and was characterized according to functional status, activities of daily living, and length of stay. The Student t-test was used to assess the behavior of length of stay and the Barthel Index. The chi-square test and relative risk were calculated for dichotomous variables. Results: There were no differences in the behavior of length of stay (p: 0.35) or the Barthel Index (p: 0.83). 49.6% of the aged had some degree of dependency. Being 80 years of age or older was associated with and represents a risk for presenting difficulties in urination (p: 0.016, RR: 2.56 CI: 1.18-5.55). Moderate to severe dependence and having at least five affected functions were associated with and represent a risk of prolonged hospitalization: (p0.015, RR: 4.91 CI: 1.23-19.61) and (p: 0.008, RR: 4.27 CI: 1.38-13.27) respectively. Conclusions: In aged with heart failure there is a significant prevalence of some state of dependence and regardless of age, having at least five activities of daily living affected or having moderate to severe dependence represents a risk of prolonged hospitalization.
